2 Peter 1:3-11

Imagine you have to drive somewhere, somewhere you’ve never been. But, instead of looking at a map, you decide to just wing it. Or, imagine you’re going to build a house, but instead of using a blueprint, you decide to just start hammering boards together. For myself, just the thought of drive somewhere I’ve never been without even looking at a map is just unnerving to me. Nonetheless, if a person did that, they might get lost or disoriented along the way, but they would probably reach their destination, eventually. Someone can build a house without a blueprint, but chances are things won’t go as smoothly as it would if they had used one. And, I would say something similar is true for the Christian faith.

He, too, is a child of God.

Luke 18:9-14

There is a hazard for the modern Christian who reads this parable. What I mean is, we don’t want to view the Pharisee in this parable in such a way that we end up doing exactly what he does. It might be tempting to congratulate ourselves because, unlike this Pharisee, maybe we’re not self-righteous. It might be tempting to pride ourselves in the fact that we trust in God’s grace and not in our own good works. And so, it might be tempting to view this Pharisee with some contempt. Of course, if we did that, we would end up doing exactly what he does. So, there is a hazard we need to be aware of when we read this passage.

Our Inheritance

What would you do if you knew you had a priceless inheritance waiting for you? If you knew you had an inheritance and knew it was priceless, what would you do? Well, as I am sure you know, in Jesus Christ have been promised a priceless inheritance. 1 Peter 1:4 (NLT) “…we have a priceless inheritance—an inheritance that is kept in heaven for you, pure and undefiled, beyond the reach of change and decay.” We have a priceless inheritance given to us by God through Jesus Christ. And what is this inheritance? This inheritance is life, flourishing life, abundant life in the kingdom of God where righteousness and love and peace are at home. This is our inheritance.
