I’m sure you’re familiar with the image of our Lord as the Good Shepherd. Jesus is the Good Shepherd who calls his sheep by name. They know his voice and follow him when he calls. He guides them, protects them, and provides for them. It’s probably one of more beloved metaphor’s for Christ.

A Living Faith
In
this letter to Timothy, the Apostle Paul is writing from prison. He’s pretty
certain that his time in this world is short. And so, he writes a young
Timothy with some parting words of guidance and encouragement. The whole idea
of this letter is to encouragement Timothy to fan the flame of his faith and use the gifts the Holy Spirit gave him. And so, one of
the first things Paul does is remind Timothy of his spiritual roots in
the faith.

On the difference between mere belief and faith
In
our day, belief is almost always limited to a kind of cognitive activity. If I
believe something, then something is happening in my mind. So if I say, “I believe that Jesus is Lord” it sounds as if I am saying I believe some fact
about Jesus, i.e. that he is Lord. Now there’s nothing wrong with believing
such a thing, but the question still remains: Does believing that fact make a
difference in how I live?
